Toddler vs Car Seat: The Plank Always Wins
October 31, 2026 · Funny Toddler Video · 3 min read
Some parents measure their morning in minutes. Car seat parents measure it in attempts. In this Short, Milo reveals a skill every toddler seems to be born with: the ability to turn into a solid wooden plank the moment a buckle comes near. Mom and Dad are about to discover that teamwork, tickles and physics are no match for it.
The story: attempt 47
We join the battle already in progress. Dad is wedged upside down in the back seat. Milo lies perfectly straight across the car seat, arms by his sides, eyes on the ceiling, like a tiny ironing board. Dad, out of breath: "He's… a plank."
Try one: Dad gently folds Milo at the middle. Milo springs back straight with a cartoon BOING, and Dad's glasses fly off. Try two: Mom steps in with total confidence. "Watch the pro." She goes for the tickle trick. Milo doesn't crack a smile, and the tickle bounces off him with a metal CLANG. Try three: both parents push together, so hard that the whole car tips up onto two wheels. Milo does not bend one inch.
And then, for no reason at all, he goes floppy, sits down like a little angel and says, "Okay." Click. The parents high-five, sweaty and triumphant, and slide the door shut. Cut to inside the car, where Milo looks up sweetly from his perfectly buckled seat and announces: "I need to pee." Freeze on two faces pressed against the window. Even the dog in the front seat puts a paw over its eyes. Attempt 48 begins.
Why toddlers turn into planks
If you've lived through this, you know it isn't really about the seat. For a toddler, getting buckled in is one of the few moments in the day when someone else is clearly in charge of their body, and going stiff is a very effective way to say "I'd like a vote." It's also a game. A parent pushing and a kid resisting is basically wrestling, and wrestling is fun.
The sudden switch to "Okay" is classic too. Once the point has been made, the protest is over, and the next item on the agenda (in this case, the bathroom) takes over immediately.
Parent survival list for the car seat battle
- Ask "bathroom first?" before you leave the house. You already know why.
- Give a small choice. "Do you want to climb in or should I lift you?" lets them win something.
- Make it a race or a routine. A silly buckle song or a countdown turns the fight into a game.
- Keep a car-only toy. Something they only get once the click happens is a strong motivator.
- Follow your seat's manual every time. Even after attempt 48, the straps still need to be snug and right.
Your turn: how long does the car seat battle last at your house, and what finally works? Tell us in the comments on the Short.
