My Toddler Fired a Manta Ray at the Aquarium

November 3, 2026 · Funny Toddler Video · 3 min read

Most families visit the aquarium to look at fish. Milo visited to run it. In our newest Short, our three-year-old boss walks into a glowing underwater tunnel, raises one hand, and makes an announcement to everyone with gills: "Attention, fish. I am your king." And the strangest part? The fish seem to agree. Well, most of them.

The story: a royal visit to the fish tunnel

First order of business: "Everybody, swim LEFT!" And a whole school of silver fish swirls left, right on cue. Mom can't believe it: "Are the fish… actually listening?" Milo doubles down. "Now spin! Spin!" The fish spin. Dad, deadpan: "Okay. That's weird."

Then a shadow passes over the tunnel. A giant manta ray glides overhead, huge and calm, completely ignoring the new management. Milo gasps: "Who is THAT?" Dad leans in and whispers, "Buddy… that's the boss fish." There can only be one boss in this aquarium, and it's not going to be a flat fish with wings. Milo looks up, points, and delivers the verdict with zero hesitation: "Big fish. You're fired."

Mom loses it: "He just fired a manta ray." But a good leader also rewards talent. At the jellyfish tank, Milo spots a glowing, floaty jelly and softens instantly: "Okay. You can be the queen." Dad, whispering: "She got promoted." And then, like any busy executive, Milo turns back to his kingdom: "Now… where was I?"

Why toddlers think they're in charge of everything

At three, the world is full of coincidences that look a lot like magic. You point, the fish swim. You shout, the door opens. Little kids are still figuring out cause and effect, so when something happens right after they do something, the obvious conclusion is: I did that. It's why toddlers "make" the elevator come and "turn on" the streetlights.

Add a big, dim, glowing aquarium and you've basically built a throne room. Every swirl of fish feels like a royal decree being obeyed.

For the record, the manta ray did not file a complaint. It simply kept gliding, which is honestly the most professional response to being fired by a three-year-old we have ever seen.

Tips for an aquarium day with a little boss

  1. Go early or late. Fewer crowds mean more glass for tiny noses.
  2. Give them a mission. "Find the biggest fish" or "find the queen" keeps them walking.
  3. Pack a snack and a break. Dim tunnels and big tanks are exciting, and exhausting.
  4. Talk about what they see. Name colors, sizes and shapes; it's sneaky learning.
  5. Let them run the kingdom. Saying "Yes, your majesty" costs nothing and buys a lot of cooperation.
