New Rule: First Yawn Goes to Bed (Dad Yawned First)

October 31, 2026 · Funny Toddler Video · 3 min read

Most household rules come from parents. Not in Milo's house. At 7:45 on the dot, the tiny judge climbs onto his chair, raises a toy gavel and announces a brand-new law. Dad thinks it's the best rule ever written. Mom thinks it's a trap. They're about to find out who's right.

The story: the rule, the debate and the yawn

Bang goes the gavel. Milo, in his gold crown and pajamas, delivers the ruling with a perfectly straight face: "New rule: whoever yawns first… goes to bed." Dad lights up and points at him. "Honestly? We obey. Best rule he's ever made." Mom crosses her arms: "He has never yawned. In his LIFE."

So the debate begins. "It's democracy," says Dad. "It's a trap," says Mom. Milo sits down, steeples his fingers like a judge on a TV show, and whispers just one word: "Continue." Dad keeps talking, sinking lower and lower into the tiny kid chair, the lamp light getting cozier by the second. "Look, I'm just saying, a well-rested family is a… a… haaaawwn."

Silence. One cricket. Mom and Milo turn their heads at exactly the same time. Gavel bang. Milo points at the bed: "Dad. Bed." Mom switches sides instantly and cheerfully: "Rules are rules, babe!" Next thing we know, Dad is squeezed into the tiny dinosaur bed with his feet hanging off the end while Milo pats his head. "Shhh." And in the final seconds, Milo lets out a tiny yawn of his own, looks around nervously, grabs the gavel and starts again: "New rule—"

Why toddlers love making the rules

Toddlers live in a world run by other people's rules: when to eat, when to sleep, when to stop jumping on the couch. So when they get the chance to make a rule of their own, they take the job very seriously. A made-up rule is a little taste of power, and it's usually designed with one goal: the toddler wins.

Of course, the rules change the moment they stop working. That's not cheating, that's toddler law. And the bedtime part is painfully relatable for every tired grown-up. By the end of the day, the adults are often the first ones yawning.

Parent survival list for toddler rule-makers

  1. Let them make small rules. "Everyone hops to the bath" is a harmless way to give them some say.
  2. Keep the big rules yours. Bedtime, safety and screens stay with the grown-ups.
  3. Turn bedtime into a game. A silly race or a rule like Milo's can make the routine feel fun.
  4. Present a united front. If one parent is "team toddler", bedtime gets longer.
  5. Go to bed early yourself sometimes. Honestly, Dad might have been onto something.
