Toddler Rule at the Gondola: The Tallest Person Waits
November 3, 2026 · Funny Toddler Video · 3 min read
Family travel is full of lines: lines for boats, lines for gelato, lines for the bathroom. Most families follow the rules posted on the sign. Ours follows the rules posted by Milo. In our newest Short, at a golden-hour canal in a storybook Venice-style town, the boss stands on the gondola dock, raises one finger and announces the new boarding policy: "New rule. The tallest person waits."
The story: Dad gets sent to the back of the line
Dad does a quick head count and realizes the problem. "Wait. That's… only me." Milo points behind him without even looking: "Back of the line, Daddy." Mom, who knows a winning argument when she hears one: "He's not wrong. You ARE the tallest." Dad tries to appeal on statistical grounds: "I'm six feet. That's average!" Denied.
Boarding begins. Milo steps into the gondola and waves his mother in with a compliment that is also a policy: "Mommy, you're short. Get in." Mom has zero objections: "I'll take it." Then, to the gondolier, with the politeness of a tiny duke: "Row, please."
And off they go. Dad is left alone on the dock holding a gelato, shouting across the water: "Buddy, the boat is leaving!" Milo waves sweetly from the gondola: "Bye bye, tall Daddy!" Dad looks at his gelato, looks at the boat, and makes peace with it in a whisper: "Fine. More gelato for me." Back on the boat, Milo is already drafting the next policy: "Okay. Next rule…"
Why toddler rules always leave Dad behind
Toddler rules have a pattern: they are very specific, they sound fair, and somehow they always target exactly one person. That's not an accident. Little kids are learning how rules work by inventing their own, and the most fun part is watching a grown-up actually follow one. Dad is a perfect target because he plays along, and because watching the biggest person in the family lose is endlessly funny to the smallest one.
Every family has its designated "left behind" person. Usually they end up with the best snack.
To be fair, Dad had the gelato.
Tips for family travel with a little boss
- Let them make one harmless rule a day. It burns off boss energy before the big moments.
- Plan around golden hour. Cooler air, softer light and calmer crowds suit tired toddlers.
- Keep a gelato budget. It's the universal cure for being left on the dock.
- Hold hands on docks and boats. Water and toddlers need close supervision.
- Build in downtime. A rested toddler writes much nicer rules.
