My Toddler Steered a Hot Air Balloon (Dad Can't Look Down)

November 3, 2026 · Funny Toddler Video · 3 min read

Some dads are brave. Some dads are afraid of heights. And some dads are afraid of heights but go on a hot air balloon ride anyway, because their kid asked nicely. In our newest Short, Milo stands in the basket at sunrise, high above a valley full of colorful balloons, and points forward like a ship's captain: "New rule. Daddy isn't allowed to look down."

The story: Captain Milo takes the basket

Dad is on board with this rule. Very on board. Eyes squeezed shut, hands gripping the rim: "Fine. Not looking. Great rule." Mom, amused: "Babe, you're squeezing the basket."

Meanwhile, the captain has bigger plans. "Balloons… go LEFT!" And the whole festival of balloons drifts left. Mom can't believe it: "Wait, they're actually going left." Dad, still with his eyes closed, whispers the boring truth: "That's just the wind, buddy." Nobody listens to him.

Then Milo springs the trap, the oldest one in the toddler playbook. "Daddy! Look at the cows!" And Dad, without thinking, looks over the edge, sees how high they really are, and immediately regrets it: "Nope! Nope!" Milo giggles: "You looked. You lose." Mom checks the clock: "Four seconds. New record." Dad, pale and shaky: "I'd like to land now." Captain Milo has other ideas: "Okay. Everybody go UP!"

Why toddlers love catching grown-ups breaking rules

Toddlers spend all day following rules they didn't make. So when a grown-up has to follow one of THEIR rules, it's the best game in the world, and catching the grown-up breaking it is even better. It's the same energy as "you said a bad word!" Little kids love fairness, as long as it applies to you.

And yes, toddlers are excellent at tricks. "Look at the cows!" is a classic, right up there with "what's that behind you?"

The best part is that the rule had nothing to do with balloons. It was always about Dad. A toddler doesn't need to fly a balloon to be in charge of the flight; they just need to find the one person in the basket who is more nervous than they are, and then give that person a rule they cannot possibly keep.

Tips for a hot air balloon ride with family

  1. Check the age rules first. Many balloon companies have minimum ages or heights, so ask before you book.
  2. Go to a festival. Watching from the ground is free, spectacular and toddler-friendly.
  3. Dress in layers. Sunrise flights are cold at takeoff and warm by landing.
  4. Bring snacks for the ground crew wait. There's a lot of standing around.
  5. If you're scared of heights, look at the horizon. And not at the cows.
